New Hampshire Wildlife Control Operator Level II Class

Wildlife Control Operators (WCO) in New Hampshire are required to complete a 6-hour workshop prior to conducting business in the state. (Call 603- 868-1095.) A N.H. Fish and Game Trapper Education Course also must be completed (for Trapper Education course listings, click here).

Next class offered: Fish and Game will offer its annual New Hampshire Wildlife Control Operators (WCO) Class on January 10, 2008 (scroll down this page for agenda). To receive more information, contact 603-271-2461 and ask to be added to the WCO II Workshop mailing list or submit the request via e-mail to wildlife@wildlife.nh.gov.  Be sure to include your name, address and telephone number.  There is no fee for the class. Pre-registration is highly recommended!

Class starts promptly at 8:30 a.m. -- arrive by 8:15 to register. Late arrivals will be denied certification.

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • Wildlife biology and ecology
  • Best management practices including exclusion, repellants and proper trapping techniques.
  • Consideration of humane issues with wildlife
  • Euthanasia
  • Landowner relations
  • Diseases, hazards and risks
  • Ethical operations and expectations for conducting control in NH

8:15 a.m. -- Registration

8:30 a.m.-- Introduction

8:35 a.m. -- Pat Tate NH Fish & Game Wildlife Biologist- Techniques for control, ethical control, humane issues and timing of control based on animal biology/reproduction. Site evaluation, non-lethal control, exclusion and prevention.

9:15 a.m.-- NH Fish & Game Conservation Officer -- Reading and discussing the rules for operating a wildlife control business in New Hampshire.

10:00 a.m.-- Break

10:15  a.m.-- Joshua Janicke, Wildlife Specialist USDA APHIS -- NH Wildlife Services; advice and materials available. Which animals are most frequently considered nuisance, responsibilities for deer, bear, and moose complaints in New Hampshire.

11:00 a.m.-- Marsha Barden, Wildlife Specialist USDA APHIS -- Federally protected species and laws. What is legal for WCO II’s to handle. Permits for waterfowl control. Controlling federally protected species; techniques for preventing reoccurrences, repellants, scare devices. Best management practices for avian species.

11:45 a.m.-- Linda Verville, NH Fish & Game Wildlife Programs Specialist - How to submit your annual report. How to sign up for the NHF&G WCO II list for referrals from F&G.

12:00 noon -- Lunch -- on your own.

12:30  p.m.-- Richard Kingston, DMV. -Capturing and handling wildlife, human/wildlife disease concerns and hazards. Humane issues including proper euthanasia techniques for wildlife.

1:15  p.m.-- Paul Debow, Debow Wildlife Services- Site evaluation, including trap placement techniques, ethical trapping, exclusion methods and preventing further conflicts.

2:00 p.m.-- Mike Morrison, NH Trappers Association- Land owner skills, site evaluation, your responsibilities as a WCO. Avoiding non-target animals and trapping safety.

2:45 p.m.-- Wrap up

3:00 p.m.-- Certificate presentation
