Acquisition History: Richard Sargent donated
land to the Fish and Game Department during the late 1960s and early
1970s, which led to the creation of this WMA.
Description: The WMA consists of four
non-contiguous areas that together total approx. 356 acres. The habitats
are mostly upland forest that includes white pine, red oak, red
maple and scattered eastern hemlock. Portions of the WMAs include
wetland habitats, often dominated by cattails. There is very little
open water.
Common Wildlife: White-tailed deer, snowshoe
hare, ruffed grouse, otter, mink and muskrat abound.
Directions: Sargent WMA is actually 4
separate properties. Roadside parking is available at all four:
- From Rowes Corner, travel northerly along
Route 108 one-half mile to Heath Street, then westerly along Heath
Street one mile. The WMA will be on the north side of
the road.
- From Rowes Corner, travel northerly along
Maple Avenue two miles to the Junction of Gale Village Road. The
WMA is on the north side of Gale Village Road.
- From Rowes Corner, travel southerly along
Bear Hill .5 miles to the WMA on the east side of the
road on the Massachusetts state line.
- From Newton Road off of the B&M Railroad
