New Hampshire Wildlife Management Areas
Kona Wildlife Management Area
Town: Moultonboro
County: Carroll
Acres: 321
Acquisition History: The Kona WMA was
transferred from the Department of Resources and Economic Development
to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department in 1969.
Description: With the exception of 10
acres of old fields, this WMA consists of forests with stands of
white pine and mixed hardwoods. The topography is variable, ranging
from flat and wet to steep and ledgy. It includes 3,025 feet of
frontage on Braun Bay of Lake Winnipesaukee. There are small beaver
ponds throughout the property, and a system of woods roads for walking.
Common Wildlife: Wood ducks, mallards,
black ducks, beaver, white-tailed deer, moose and black bear can
be found. In Lake Winnipesaukee, there are a variety of fish species,
such as landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, smallmouth
and largemouth bass, and several species of panfish; i.e. yellow
and white perch, pickerel, bluegills, sunfish and bullheads (horned
pout). Shoreline angling from the Kona WMA will likely produce small
and largemouth bass, and the aforementioned panfish species. Loons
have nested on the shoreline in the past.
Special Notes: Active habitat management
has occurred to retain open areas for habitat diversity, through
a timber harvest in 1993. These areas offer browse and nesting habitats.
Directions: From Route 25, take Moultonboro
Neck Rd. Turn right onto Kona Farm Rd. and then left onto Jacobs.
