Salamanders of New Hampshire

There are 12 species of salamanders that can be found in New Hampshire.  Some of these species such as the redback salamander are common and widespread across the state, while others like the marbled salamander are very rare and protected under state law. Three of the 12 species (blue spotted salamander, Jefferson’s salamander, and marbled salamander) were identified as species in greatest need of conservation in the New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan.  Salamanders are secretive and basic distribution data is lacking. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department maintains a database of all reptile and amphibian reports through its Reptile and Amphibian Reporting Program (RAARP).
