Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (B.O.W.) is a chance for women age 18 or older to learn outdoor skills they can use in fishing, hunting and other outdoor pursuits -- presented in a fun, supportive environment in the company of other women. Co-sponsored by the N.H. Fish and Game Department and the N.H. Wildlife Federation, New Hampshire's B.O.W. program has been teaching outdoor skills to women since 1994.

  • Fall B.O.W. weekend workshops feature classes in archery, fly-fishing, spincasting, firearms use, camping, backpacking, nature photography, canoeing, kayaking, map and compass, outdoor survival and much more.
  • The one-day winter B.O.W. workshop encourages participants to get out and enjoy the great outdoors during the cold months, with classes on ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, winter survival skills and "shoe and shoot."
  • Other specialty workshops at varying skill levels are offered from time to time to go "Beyond B.O.W.

For registration materials, more information, scholarship details and photos of past workshops, click here to visit www.nhbow.com. Many more people apply for these sessions than can be accommodated, so be sure to sign up early. Exact class offerings vary from year to year and season to season.

During open registration periods, applications are accepted only by mail or delivered in person to the N.H. Wildlife Federation, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord NH 03301 (phone 603-224-5953).

Upcoming B.O.W. workshops include:

Fall B.O.W. weekend workshop -- Sept. 5-8, 2008
Registration for the fall weekend workshop takes place in June 2008. N.H.'s fall BOW weekend is a great chance to get into the outdoor action in the company of other adventurous women. Choose from skills sessions on archery, fly-fishing, spincasting, firearms use, camping, backpacking, nature photography, canoeing, kayaking, map and compass navigation, mountain biking and outdoor survival. Each participant attends 3-4 sessions during the weekend. Fall BOW is held in the beautiful setting of Rockywold/Deephaven Camps in Holderness, N.H., with cozy cabins set on the shores of Squam Lake. Cost: $295 (includes workshops, food and lodging).

This weekend is for you if you've never tried these activities and want the opportunity to learn; you're a beginner looking to improve your skills; you're familiar with some outdoor activities but want some new challenges; or you're looking for the camaraderie of like-minded women.

Beyond BOW-- Intermediate Fly-Fishing Weekend -- September 26-28, 2008
Purity Spring Resort in Madison, N.H.

For women with some fly-fishing experience who want to become more confident fly-fishing on their own. The weekend covers the finer points of casting -- accuracy, timing, shooting the line; reading the water and then picking a proper fly and knowing how to cast it; and what to do when you catch a fish -- playing and releasing. Participants will have the opportunity to fish both still and moving water. The weekend cost of $275 includes meals, lodging, materials and instruction. Participants must be at least 18 years old. A registration form and course descriptions will be available at www.nhbow.com after registration opens in July, or call (603) 271-3212 in July to request an application by mail. Class space is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

B.O.W. -- Winter Workshop: Held on a Saturday in February at Fish and Game's Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness. Registration for the 2009 winter B.O.W. workshop will open in early January 2009. The registration form will be available at www.nhbow.com at that time. Exact dates to be announced.

At Winter B.O.W. participants focus in on a single winter outdoor skill tol explore in the company of other women. Choose from topics such as ice-fishing, winter outdoor survival skills, snowshoeing, and "shoe and shoot" (combines snowshoeing and target shooting). A one-day workshop, Winter BOW is a great place to find out how much fun you can have outdoors with friends and family -- even when it's cold outside!

Click here to go to www.nhbow.com.

Though B.O.W. is designed primarily for women, the program is an opportunity for anyone 18 or older to explore new outdoor interests.
