Wildlife Control Operator Class Offered
December 27, 2007- The New Hampshire Wildlife Control Operators (WCO) training class, usually offered once a year, will take place on January 10, 2008, at Fish and Game headquarters at 11 Hazen Drive in Concord.

2007 New Hampshire Deer Harvest Highest in 40 Years
December 26, 2007 -- New Hampshire's estimated 2007 hunter harvest of 13,416 deer was the highest in recent years and, when verified and finalized, will likely result in the highest "official" harvest in forty years (since 1967).

Fish and Game Commission January Meeting Changes
December 26, 2007 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission will hold two meetings in January. Both will take place at the N.H. Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive in Concord. The meetings will take place on Monday, January 7, at 9 a.m.; and on Wednesday, January 23, at 1 p.m. Please note that these dates deviate from the Commission's routine schedule.

N.H. Ice Conditions Unpredictable - "Know before You Go"
December 21, 2007 - The deep snow already covering the state may mask unsafe ice conditions, cautions Major Tim Acerno of the N.H. Fish and Game Department. Outdoor enthusiasts are urged to play it safe and check ice carefully before venturing onto ice-covered waters.

N.H. Fishing Rule Changes for 2008
December 20, 2007 -- As the start of the new year approaches, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department wants anglers to be aware of several administrative rule changes that will take effect in 2008. Changes affect the use of cusk fishing gear and gaffs, as well as rules for certain waterbodies.

Last Call for 2007 Fish and Game Commission Award Nominations
December 19, 2007-- Time is running out to submit nominations for the 2007 N.H. Fish and Game Commission Awards of Excellence. Nominations must be postmarked by December 31. If you know a person or organization that has furthered the N.H. Fish and Game Department's mission and made a difference for the state's fish, wildlife or marine resources and their habitats, recognize their achievements by nominating them.

Winter Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Workshop Opens January 7
December 18, 2007 - Women who want to explore active outdoor interests like ice-fishing or snowshoeing can attend a one-day Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (B.O.W.) winter workshop on Saturday, February 23, 2008 (snow date February 24), at N.H. Fish and Game's Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness. Registration opens January 7 and runs through February 8.

Public Hearing on January 2 on Public Information Document for Amendment 2 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Shad and River Herring
December 17, 2007 -- People interested in river herring (alewives and blueback herring) and those who fish in N.H. state waters for river herring may be interested in attending a public hearing on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Public Information Document for Amendment 2 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan to Shad and River Herring on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth.

Coordinated Search for Missing Hunter Concludes
December 6, 2007 -- A major, five-day search effort for missing hunter Russell Bussiere will come to a close at the end of the day, according to N.H. Fish and Game Chief of Law Enforcement, Colonel Jeff Gray.

Coordinated Search Effort for Missing Hunter Will Continue For One More Day
December 5, 2007, 4:30 p.m. -- Fish and Game's Chief of Law Enforcement, Colonel Jeff Gray, has announced that the search for missing hunter Russell Bussiere will continue on a scaled-down basis early Thursday morning (December 6). The continued search will rely on specially trained search and rescue teams; additional volunteers are not being requested at this time.

December 5, 2007, 11:45 a.m. -- The search for missing hunter Russell Bussiere has continued since early this morning. A core group of approximately 100 individuals that are experienced and highly trained in winter operations are participating in today's ground search efforts. No further volunteers are being requested.

November 26, 2007 - A ceremonial bill signing will take place on Friday, November 30, at 3:30 p.m. in the State House Executive Council Chambers. Governor John Lynch will sign House Bill 657 and kick off a new program that authorizes the Executive Director of the N.H. Fish and Game Department to issue up to two hunting adventure permits for any species including moose, free of charge, to a nonprofit organization.

Meredith Man Injured in Hunting-related Shooting Incident
November 15, 2007-- A Meredith, N.H., man sustained a self-inflicted wound in a hunting-related shooting incident that occurred before 8 a.m. on Thursday morning (November 15). John A. Hurd suffered a non-life-threatening foot injury while deer hunting with his father and nephew in an area of Ahern State Park in Laconia.

Fish and Game Commission Seeks Nominations for Awards of Excellence
November 9, 2007 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission is looking for nominations for its annual Awards of Excellence program to recognize outstanding achievements in furthering the Department's mission. Deadline is December 31.

New Great Bay Management Plan Will Guide Reserve Strategy Through 2010
November 8, 2007 -- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released the revised Management Plan for New Hampshire's Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Opening Day for Firearms Deer Season Is Nov. 14; Youth Weekend Tally
November 7, 2007-- Opening Day for New Hampshire's firearms deer season is November 14. Many of the state's estimated 60,000 deer hunters will go afield during this season. Preliminary figures indicate that youth hunters took 605 deer during the N.H. Youth Hunt weekend.

Lisbon, N.H., Man Injured in Hunting-related Shooting Incident
November 7, 2007-- A Lisbon, N.H., man sustained a self-inflicted wound in a hunting-related shooting incident late Monday afternoon (November 5). James White, age 33, of Lisbon suffered a non-life-threatening arm injury as he was attempting to reload his muzzleloader rifle while deer hunting.

Fish and Game Commission November Meeting Change; New Officers
November 5, 2007 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Commission will hold its November monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 28, at 1 p.m. at the N.H. Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive in Concord. This is a change from the usual schedule.

"Let's Go Fishing" Volunteer Ice Fishing Instructor Training Offered
November 2, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game needs anglers to serve as volunteer ice fishing instructors for the Let's Go Fishing program, which teaches ice fishing to youth and adults. Two opportunities are coming up for ice fishing instructor certification training -- December 1 and December 8; applications are due by November 21.

Public Hearing/Season-Setting Meeting for Northern Shrimp on November 14
October 31, 2007 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department will hold a public hearing and season-setting meeting for the northern shrimp fishing season on Wednesday, November 14, at 10:00 a.m., at the Portsmouth Public Library.

2007 New Hampshire Moose Hunt a Success
October 30, 2007 -- New Hampshire's 2007 moose season was a success, with preliminary figures showing that hunters took about 479 moose. With approximately 675 permits issued, this represents a statewide success rate of 71%.

Sign Up for Snowmobile Safety Class
October 30, 2007-- It's time to sign up for snowmobile education class. Any person over the age of 12 must have either a valid driver's license or have completed an approved Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle Safety Education class taught by Fish and Game-trained volunteer instructors.

Moose Hunt Update: Half of N.H. Moose Hunters Successful So Far
October 25, 2007 -- As of October 24, a total of 377 moose had been taken in the 2007 New Hampshire moose hunt (271 bulls and 106 cows). That means that more than half (about 56%) of hunters holding moose permits had succeeded by the mid-way point in the state's moose hunt.

N.H. Archery Deer Harvest to Date Is Highest in at Least 9 Years
October 24, 2007-- Early reports from the archery deer season indicate that there are lots of deer in the woods this fall for New Hampshire hunters. The deer harvest through October 21 was the highest in at least nine years, with most counties showing significant increases, according to Deer Project Leader Kent Gustafson.

Tragic Hiker Death in White Mountains
October 23, 2007 -- The name of a 32-year-old Danish woman who was killed in a tragic accident in the White Mountain National Forest on October 20 has been released. Stine Rossel had been hiking with her husband Brian Wood, of Somerville, Mass.

Moose Hunt Opening Weekend Brings 28.6% Success
October 22, 2007 -- More than a quarter of New Hampshire's moose hunters were successful during the first two days of the 20th annual New Hampshire moose season, taking a total of 193 moose on the opening weekend of the hunt.

October 18, 2007 -- Young deer hunters will have their own opportunity for success on October 27-28, when New Hampshire's youth deer hunt is held. This special weekend gives young people statewide the opportunity to go deer hunting with an adult mentor.

Marine Rule Hearing Set
October 16, 2007 -- Anglers fishing the Salmon Falls River in Rollinsford; those taking haddock commercially; and recreational harvesters of oysters should note that the Marine Fisheries Division will hold a public hearing on proposed changes in the marine fisheries regulations on Tuesday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at Fish and Game's Region 3 Office, 225 Main Street, Durham, N.H.

Access Facility at Pleasant Lake, Deerfield, to Close October 29 - November 23, 2007
October 15, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game's boat access facility at Pleasant Lake in Deerfield will be closed from October 29 through November 23, 2007, as the Department completes the second phase of this construction project, the installation of a new boat ramp.

N.H. Moose Hunt Is October 20 - 28, 2007
October 15, 2007 -- For nine days, from October 20 to 28, 2007, a lucky 675 moose permit holders and their hunting partners will have the experience of a lifetime taking part in New Hampshire's 20th annual moose hunt.

Good News for Great Bay Oysters: Successful 2006 Oysters Continue to Thrive
October 12, 2007 -- Great Bay oysters had a very successful reproductive year in 2006, and continued monitoring suggests that this "year class" of oysters may prove instrumental in rebuilding Great Bay oyster stocks.

Fall Shotgun Turkey Season
October 10, 2007--- New Hampshire's five-day fall shotgun turkey hunting season takes place Monday through Friday, October 15-19, in select Wildlife Management Units in the Connecticut River Valley and southwest portions of the state.

October 9, 2007--- The public has a chance to offer input on any aspect of N.H. Access Facility at Manning Lake, Gilmanton, To Be Closed October 8 - 26, 2007
October 3, 2007 -- The N.H. Fish and Game boat access facility at Manning Lake in Gilmanton will be closed from October 8 through October 26, 2007, as the Department begins reconstruction of the existing boat ramp.

Search Commences for Next Fish and Game Executive Director
October 1, 2007 -- Fish and Game Commission Chairman Glenn Normandeau announced today their search will resume during the first week of October to fill the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Executive Director position. This position was vacated with the retirement of Lee E. Perry in August of 2007. A search committee has been named; Cheshire County Commissioner Robert Phillipson, Jr. will chair it.

Brood Stock Atlantic Salmon Offer Exciting Fall Fishing
September 28, 2007-- Anglers looking for some challenging catch-and-release sport fishing while they're enjoying the fall foliage should head to the Merrimack and Pemigewasset rivers to hook the "King of Fish." October and November are prime months for fall Atlantic salmon fishing in New Hampshire.

Commercial Spiny Dogfish Fishery to Close October 3, 2007
September 28, 2007 -- Commercial fish harvesters are advised that the allowable spiny dogfish quota for the 2007/2008 fishing season (through April 30, 2008) has been reached. Therefore, the New Hampshire fishery for spiny dogfish will be closed in both state and federal waters effective October 3.

Hunters Can Help N.H. Food Bank Feed the Hungry
September 27, 2007 -- New Hampshire's hunters can help the less fortunate by sharing their fall harvest with the "Hunt for the Hungry" program. The New Hampshire Food Bank, based in Manchester, is collecting donations of whole or processed game animals for distribution to more than 350 food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and group homes statewide.

Wildlife Action Grants Available for Teachers
September 26, 2007 --- A new round has opened for teachers interested in starting wildlife habitat projects to apply to the Homes for Wildlife Action Grant Program at the N.H. Fish and Game Department for start-up funds. Grant application deadline: November 30, 2007.

Pheasant Season Opens October 1
September 25, 2007 -- A long-standing fall tradition in New Hampshire, the pheasant hunting season gets underway on October 1. Around the state, hunters will be afield in pursuit of the flashy, ring-necked upland game birds.

Public Hearing on Marine Rule Changes to Be Held October 3, 2007
September 25, 2007 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will hold a public hearing on proposed marine rule changes on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. at the Urban Forestry Center at 45 Elwyn Road in Portsmouth, N.H.

Small Game Season Opens October 1
September 25, 2007 -- Much of New Hampshire's small game hunting opens on October 1, except the woodcock season, which opens October 6, 2007. Participants in the Small Game Survey will have a chance to win a hunting rifle.

Three Successful Searches Concluded
September 24, 2007- Three separate search and rescue operations ended successfully on Sunday, keeping N.H. Fish and Game Law Enforcement officials busy as the weekend came to a close. The incidents involved a missing Walpole Woman, an injured hiker in Franconia Notch, and three boys separated from a church group on a day hike.

Prescribed Burn in Concord Airport Area to Improve Wildlife Habitat
September 19, 2007 -- New Hampshire Fish and Game and the N.H. Department of Resources and Economic Development Division of Forests and Lands, with support from the N.H. Army National Guard, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and City of Concord, will be conducting a "prescribed burn" in areas on and near Concord Municipal Airport grounds. The prescribed burn is likely to take place this weekend, Saturday, September 22.

Successful Search for Missing Woman in Wolfeboro
September 18, 2007 -- A 63-year-old woman is recovering from a chilly night in the woods, having been found by rescuers approximately 10 hours after leaving her daughter's home on Beech Pond Road in Wolfeboro.

Atlantic Herring Harvesters Notified of Spawning Closure
September 18, 2007 -- Herring fishermen and dealers should be aware that herring spawning areas within the jurisdiction of New Hampshire will be closed from 12:01 a.m. on September 21 through 12:01 a.m. on October 20, 2007.

September 17, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division has announced two additional days of closure to restrictions on the take of Atlantic herring.

Hunters May not Take Spikehorns in WMU-A
September 14, 2007 -- With the start of New Hampshire's archery deer season on September 15, hunters should note new regulations in Wildlife Management Unit A in the North Country. An antler point restriction is in place in this unit, and the number of days available to hunt deer has been reduced, in an effort to improve the "buck age class structure" in WMU-A.

NH Fish and Game is NOT Considering Controlling Deer Numbers With Contraceptives
September 13, 2007 -- The NH Fish and Game Commission voted on September 12, 2007, to move forward with an initiative to regulate the use of drugs by any person for fertility control or growth stimulation in wildlife. The initiative is intended to prevent the use of wildlife fertility control drugs without a permit from the NH Fish and Game Department. The Department has no intent to use such drugs nor to permit their use anywhere in New Hampshire.

September 12, 2007 -- Kevin Race of Woolwich, Maine, age 46, was reported overdue from a day hike on Mount Washington on Monday evening (September 10, 2007), according to Lt. Douglas Gralenski of N.H. Fish and Game.

September 7, 2007 -- The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and NH Fish and Game are joining forces to remind outdoor enthusiasts such as hunters, anglers and hikers that mosquitoes and ticks don't have to keep you indoors. While mosquitoes may carry diseases such as West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and ticks may transmit Lyme disease, it's easy to protect yourself and your family.

54th Annual Trappers Rendezvous

Early Migratory Game Bird Seasons
August 31, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game has announced 2007 hunting season dates and bag limits for early season migratory game birds, with few changes from last year. Of note for this fall, the opening date for New Hampshire's woodcock season has been changed to October 6.

Atlantic Herring Landing Restricted

Injured Hiker Rescued from Mount Jefferson
August 28, 2007 -- An injured hiker was airlifted off Mount Jefferson in New Hampshire's White Mountains this morning. Quentas Chess, age 53, of Mamaroneck, NY, had been hiking with three companions on the Jefferson Loop Trail when he was injured.

Atlantic Coast Shellfishing Closed Because of "Red Tide"
June 19, 2007 -- To protect the public from the possible consumption of contaminated shellfish, officials from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department have closed the Atlantic coastal waters to the taking of shellfish until further notice. This action is in response to elevated levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning or PSP, commonly known as "red tide," detected in blue mussels collected from the Isles of Shoals and from Hampton/Seabrook Harbor.

Successful Search for Elderly Woman

Volunteers Needed to Help Stock Atlantic Salmon Fry
April 9, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game is looking for volunteers to help stock millions of inch-long salmon fry into the Merrimack River basin; several rivers and streams in the Upper Connecticut River watershed in northern New Hampshire; and the Monadnock region of southwestern New Hampshire's Connecticut River watershed.

Promising Outlook for New Hampshire Spring Turkey Hunt
April 9, 2007-- A successful 2007 spring gobbler season is shaping up for New Hampshire hunters. The state's spring turkey hunt runs from May 3 through May 31. In 2006, a total of 3,559 turkeys were harvested from 223 towns during the state's spring turkey season.

Fly-Fishing Workshop Offered in Hancock
April 9, 2007 -- An upcoming 2-day workshop in Hancock, offers a chance to learn about the traditional and timeless sport of fly-fishing. Local Man Injured in Snowmobile Accident
January 24, 2007 -- David Scalley, age 41, of Twin Mountain, N.H., was injured in a snowmobile accident at about 6:15 on Tuesday night, January 23, 2007. Riding with four friends on the Old Cherry Mountain Road snowmobile trail in Twin Mountain, Scalley failed to navigate a turn and rode his sled into a tree.

Lost Hiker Rescued from Mount Lafayette Summit
January 22, 2007-- The White Mountain search for lost hiker Brian Gagnon, age 24, of Merrimack, N.H., ended successfully Monday, when Gagnon was rescued by helicopter from near the summit of Mt. Lafayette after being found by wilderness search and rescue teams.

In his inaugural address on January 4, Governor Lynch laid out his plans for the state for the next two years. He spoke briefly about clean air, clean water, protecting state parks and recommitting ourselves to the LCHIP -- but no mention of the value of fish, wildlife and habitat resources or the need to conserve those resources.

One Million Educators Gone WILD!
December 26, 2006 -- Project WILD, a supplementary education curriculum for K-12 students, is celebrating the milestone in 2006 of having trained one million educators nationwide. In New Hampshire, more than 3,500 educators have been trained to use Project WILD resources, reaching approximately 63,000 students annually statewide.
