Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife Watching Boost Granite State Economy
July 22, 2008 -- Wildlife-related activities are giving New Hampshire's economy a significant boost, according to a national study issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The federal survey shows that 839,000 hunters, anglers and wildlife watchers spent $560 million on wildlife-related recreation in New Hampshire in 2006.

July 22, 2008 -- If you live in New Hampshire's coastal watershed and would like to learn the most effective ways to remove invasive plant species, come to a free workshop on August 2, 2008, at the Great Bay Discovery Center in Greenland.

DES, DHHS and NH Fish and Game Issue Lobster Tomalley Advisory  
July 18, 2008 -- The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department advise seafood consumers to not eat lobster tomalley, which may contain unsafe levels of "red tide," or Paralytic Shellfish Poison toxin.

Record Number of Karner Blue Butterflies Released Into The Wild
July 17, 2008 -- It's been a busy, blue week at the Pine Barrens in Concord, where biologists with N.H. Fish and Game's Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program are releasing a record number of Karner blue butterflies into the wild as part of an ongoing species and habitat restoration program.

Winnisquam Boat Ramp (Laconia) to Be Closed on July 30, 2008
July 14, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game boat ramp on Lake Winnisquam in Laconia will be closed from dusk on Tuesday, July 29, through 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility.

N.H. Fish and Game Honors Conservation Officers of the Year
July 7, 2008 -- Three New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers were recently honored for outstanding performance -- Samuel P. Sprague of Whitefield; Christopher J. Egan of Pittsburg; and Michael G. Eastman of Gilford.

Women's Intermediate Fly Fishing Workshop/Beyond BOW
July 7, 2008 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's "Let's Go Fishing" and Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) programs are once again teaming up with the N.H. Wildlife Federation to host a fall intermediate fly-fishing weekend. 

Unit M Antlerless Deer Permits Now Available
July 2, 2008 -- Hunters who want the chance to take an additional antlerless deer in WMU M in southeastern New Hampshire during the fall hunting seasons can buy a special permit from N.H. Fish and Game starting July 1.

June 27, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Commission meeting originally scheduled for July 16, 2008, has been cancelled.  The Commission's August 20 meeting will take place at the Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness.

Lambert Park Boat Ramp (Merrimack River, Hooksett) to Be Closed for Repairs
June 27, 2008
-- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's boat ramp on the Merrimack River in Hooksett will be closed from July 7 - August 15, 2008, as Fish and Game conducts repairs to the existing boat ramp.

Public Meeting July 16 on National Saltwater Angler Registry
June 26, 2008 -- A new national saltwater angler registry will go into effect in January 2009.  To help inform saltwater anglers in New Hampshire about the upcoming change, Fish and Game will hold a public informational meeting about the national registry on July 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Urban Forestry Center, in Portsmouth, N.H.

2008 N.H. Deer Hunting Seasons Set
June 25, 2008 -- New Hampshire's deer hunting seasons have been established for this fall, and the outlook is generally good in spite of the challenging winter of 2007-2008.

Public Hearing July 9 on Proposed Rules for Endangered and Threatened Species

Lucky Day for 2008 Moose Hunt Permit Winners
June 20, 2008 -- The adventure of a lifetime is in store for 515 people who have been offered permits to hunt moose in New Hampshire this October.  They are the lucky winners in the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's annual moose permit lottery drawing, held today.

June 16, 2008 -- The annual drawing to select the lucky hunters who will be offered a permit to hunt moose in New Hampshire this fall will be held on June 20, at 9 a.m. at the N.H. Fish and Game Department in Concord, N.H.

Hearing Set for Proposed Rules on 2009 Freshwater Fishing; Bass Tournaments
May 30, 2008 -- N.H. Fish and Game will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at 6:30 p.m., at Fish and Game headquarters in Concord, regarding proposed changes in the regulations affecting 2009 freshwater fishing in New Hampshire and the application procedure for bass tournaments.

May 28, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department will hold public hearings on proposed marine rules on lobster size limit and on Shad and River Herring management on June 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Portsmouth Public Library, 175 Parrott Avenue, Portsmouth, N.H., on the second floor in the Hilton Garden Meeting Room.

May 23, 2008 -- Anglers fishing Lake Winnipesaukee are being asked to watch for largemouth and smallmouth bass tagged as part of a N.H. Fish and Game Department Warmwater Fisheries Management Program study.

May 23, 2008 -- If you want a chance to hunt moose in New Hampshire this fall, then you better get your application in for the 2008 New Hampshire moose hunt lottery by Friday, May 30.

Lobsterman Convicted of Trap Thefts
May 21, 2008 -- Aaron J. Marconi, 39, of Portsmouth was convicted in Rockingham County Superior Court on three Class A Misdemeanor complaints of possessing lobster traps belonging to other lobstermen in the Portsmouth area.

Successful Search for Lost Hikers in White Mountains
May 16, 2008 - On Thursday, May 15, 2008 at approximately 8:30 p.m., two distressed hikers from Pennsylvania emerged early from a planned multi-day traverse of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

Brake for Moose: It Could Save Your Life
May 15, 2008 - Remember to brake for moose when traveling New Hampshire roadways. There were 198 moose/vehicle collisions in New Hampshire in 2007; in the last five years the state has averaged 230 per year.  May and June are high-risk months for encountering moose on the roads.

May 14, 2008 - The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is now accepting applications for a new register of names to be used for staffing current and future Conservation Officer Trainee vacancies.  If you've thought about becoming a Conservation Officer, this is an opportunity to be considered. May 12, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department's new boat access site on Lake Winnisquam in Laconia is currently scheduled to open on July 1, 2008.

Catch the King of Fish -- Brood Stock Atlantic Salmon
May 12, 2008 -- Spring is here, and it's time to fish for brood stock salmon.  N.H. Fish and Game is planning to release more than 1,500 Atlantic salmon into the Pemigewasset and Merrimack Rivers -- three times the number of fish that were released last year.

Hiker Dies in Franconia Notch; Hit by Falling Rock
May 9, 2008 -- In a tragic accident, Shu Qin, age 28, a woman hiker from Shanghai, China, was killed after being hit by a boulder on the Falling Waters Trail in Franconia Notch on Thursday, May 8, 2008.

Atlantic Coast and Hampton Harbor Shellfishing Closed Because of "Red Tide"
May 8, 2008 -- To protect the public from the possible consumption of contaminated shellfish, officials from the N.H. Department of Environmental Services and N.H. Fish and Game have closed New Hampshire's Atlantic coastal waters, and the waters of Hampton/Seabrook Harbor, to the taking of all species of molluscan shellfish until further notice.

May 1, 2008 - It's spring, and you know what that means: Fishing!  The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is launching an outreach campaign to remind anglers of the fun and relaxation that fishing can bring, and to encourage them to renew their fishing license for 2008.

May 1, 2008 - The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement Division announces a new online function for Operation Game Thief, a system that offers concerned citizens and responsible sportsmen and women a way to anonymously report poachers and poaching incidents. A new Operation Game Thief web page at www.WildNH.com/OGT now allows people to report fish and wildlife crimes electronically, online, 24 hours a day.

Atlantic Herring Landing Restricted
April 30, 2008 -- N.H. Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division today announced that effective May 1, 2008, commercial fishermen will not be allowed to land Atlantic herring taken from Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Management Area 1A from May 1-31. The May closure will be followed by a period of restricted days through December 31.

April 28, 2008 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's boat access facility at Pleasant Lake in Deerfield will be closed from May 5 through May 9, 2008, as the Department completes work on the boat ramp that could not be completed last fall. 

New Hampshire Fish Consumption Guidelines Updated
April 25, 2008
-- State officials responsible for monitoring New Hampshire waterways and protecting public health released updated fish consumption advice that includes several new recommendations: Stocked (hatchery-grown) trout are exempt from the statewide advisory; perch are included with other species that have length restrictions regarding consumption; and four new waterbodies have specific advisories.

Chronic Wasting Disease Not Detected in New Hampshire's Deer
April 16, 2008 -- New Hampshire's white-tailed deer population once again showed no evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD), based on monitoring data gathered during the 2007 hunting season.

Young Grafton Artist Earns Top State Honors in Junior Duck Stamp Contest
April 14, 2008 - Carole Platka, age 18, of Grafton, has taken top honors among young New Hampshire artists in the 2008 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest.   Platka's colored-pencil drawing of a mallard was chosen from among 159 entries as New Hampshire's State Best of Show in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest.  New Hampshire's portion of the contest was coordinated by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. 

Outlook Good for New Hampshire Spring Turkey Hunt
April 14, 2008 - The outlook is good for a successful 2008 New Hampshire spring gobbler hunt, according to N.H. Fish and Game Turkey Project Leader Ted Walski.  The state's spring turkey hunt runs from May 3-31. The youth turkey hunt weekend (April 26-27) precedes the regular season.

Beginning Fly-Fishing Class Offered in Hancock, N.H.
April 9, 2008 -- An upcoming free weekend workshop offers a chance to learn about the traditional sport of fly-fishing.  Fish and Game's "Let's Go Fishing" Program is pairing up with the Harris Center for Conservation Education to host "Fly-Fishing A-Z" on May 17 and 18 at the Harris Center in Hancock. Registration is limited.

Prescribed Burn in Concord Airport Area to Improve Wildlife Habitat
April 9, 2008 -- New Hampshire Fish and Game and the N.H. Department of Resources and Economic Development Division of Forests and Lands, with support from the N.H. Army National Guard, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and City of Concord, will be conducting a "prescribed burn" in areas on and near Concord Municipal Airport grounds this spring.  The prescribed burn may occur as early as Thursday, April 10, or as late as late May; the date will be finalized when the weather and atmospheric conditions are seen to be safe.

Take Your Birdfeeders Down -- or Risk Letting Bears Do It For You
April 7, 2008 -- New Hampshire bears are waking up and heading out in search of food to replenish fat reserves depleted during the long winter denning period.  Natural foods are somewhat scarce this year, so it's especially important for homeowners to take action now to reduce the chances of a bear visiting their home.

April 4, 2008 -- Wildlife biologists from N.H. Fish and Game have finished crunching the numbers for the 2007 hunting seasons, and the numbers are now available in the 2007 New Hampshire Wildlife Harvest Summary.

Proposed Change to Atlantic Herring Regulation
April 3, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department's Marine Fisheries Division will hold a public hearing regarding a proposed change to the rules for taking Atlantic sea herring on April 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Urban Forestry Center, 45 Elwyn Road in Portsmouth, N.H.

Double Snowmobile Fatality in Ossipee
April 2, 2008 -- A snowmobile accident claimed the lives of two young Ossipee residents Tuesday evening, (April 1).  The victims were Raymond Eldridge, age 18, and his 8-year-old cousin, whose name is being withheld in consideration of his age.

April 5 Public Information Meeting on Clarksville Pond Management
April 1, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department will hold a public informational meeting on April 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Colebrook Elementary School gymnasium to discuss the results of a three-year assessment of Clarksville Pond (in Coos County).

Fish and Game Donates 550 Pounds of Meat to Littleton Food Pantry
March 31, 2008 -- N.H. Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers recently delivered approximately 550 pounds of processed moose and deer meat to the Littleton, N.H., Outreach Office of the Tri-County Community Action Program (CAP), for distribution to the needy.

March 31, 2008 -- Whether you are an active Reptile and Amphibian Reporting Program (RAARP) volunteer or just interested in identifying the snake in your back yard, a new tool is now available for New Hampshire wildlife enthusiasts -- species profiles for all N.H. reptiles and amphibians on the web.

Take a Kid Hunting on Youth Turkey Weekend -- April 26-27, 2008
March 28, 2008 -- New Hampshire's 2008 youth turkey hunt will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, the weekend before spring gobbler season gets underway on May 3.  During the 2007 youth weekend, young hunters took 454 turkeys, or 12.4% of the total season harvest.

Volunteers Needed to Help Stock Atlantic Salmon Fry
March 26, 2008 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is looking for volunteers to help stock millions of inch-long salmon fry into the Merrimack River basin; several rivers and streams in the Upper Connecticut River watershed in northern New Hampshire; and the Monadnock region of southwestern New Hampshire's Connecticut River watershed.

Opening Day for Landlocked Salmon/Lake Trout Fishing April 1
March 25, 2008 -- Enthusiastic anglers will be out in force on April 1 for the start of the open-water fishing season on landlocked salmon/lake trout-managed lakes -- the true start of spring for many New Hampshire anglers.

Public Hearing on Draft Addendum XII to Amendment 3 of the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for American Lobster
March 17, 2008 -- N.H. Fish and Game will hold a public hearing on the Atlantic State Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC)'s Draft Addendum XII to Amendment 3 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for American Lobster on April 1 at the Urban Forestry Center, 45 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, N.H.

Fish and Game to Survey Walleye Catch
March 14, 2008 -- Walleye anglers, keep an eye out for New Hampshire Fish and Game Department fisheries biologists, who will be on the Connecticut River this spring conducting a creel survey for walleye.

Public Hearings Set for Proposed Wildlife Rule Changes
March 12, 2008 -- Proposed rule changes affecting wildlife and wildlife management in New Hampshire for 2008 and 2009 will be discussed at three public hearings being held by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department at 6:30 p.m. on March 31 in Lancaster, on April 1 in Keene and on April 3 at N.H. Fish and Game Department Headquarters in Concord.

Glenn Normandeau Appointed as Fish and Game Executive Director
March 11, 2008 -- Glenn Normandeau of Portsmouth, N.H., has been appointed for a four-year term as Executive Director of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. He will assume his duties on Monday, March 31.

Missing Virginia Hikers Rescued
February 19, 2008-- Search and rescue teams successfully located two missing hikers, Alex Obert, age 30, and Steven "Dewey" McCay, age 29, both of Arlington, Virginia, today.  They are both in good condition.

February 14, 2008 -- With school winter vacation weeks about to begin and New Hampshire's mountains enjoying a very snowy winter, outdoor authorities are advising the Granite State's backcountry visitors to "hikeSafe."

Missing Hikers Found in Franconia Notch; One Dead
February 12, 2008 - Two hikers missing on Mt. Lafayette were found about 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening by a 7-man rescue team. Laurence Fredrickson, age 55, of South Suttonwas pronounced dead at the Littleton Hospital.  James Osborne, age 36, of Manchester was reported to be in critical condition suffering from severe hypothermia and frostbite.

Snowshoe Hare Hunting Workshop Offered

2008 Mid-winter Bald Eagle Survey Yields Record N.H. Sightings
January 28, 2008 - Eagle-eyed observers saw a record-high total of 67 bald eagles in New Hampshire during the 2008 National Mid-winter Bald Eagle Survey two-week count period in January, including 59 (30 adults, 29 immatures) observed on Survey Day.  The effort was coordinated by NH Audubon in collaboration with the Fish and Game's Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program. 

Weekend Snowmobile Accident at Nash Stream; ATV Arrest in Berlin
January 28, 2008 -- A Lancaster man was involved in a snowmobile accident on Little Bog Pond in the Nash Stream State Forest late Saturday night.  In a separate incident the same night, a Berlin man was arrested for driving while intoxicated on an off-highway recreational vehicle.

Dover Man Convicted of Numerous Wildlife Violations
January 23, 2008 -- New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers have successfully concluded an investigation that focused on numerous unlawful hunting activities of Carl R. Chapman, age 63, of Old Rochester Road, Dover.

N.H. Candidates Sought for New England Fishery Management Council
January 18, 2008 -- The State of New Hampshire has been notified by the National Marine Fisheries Service of four vacancies for the New England Fishery Management Council's at-large seats, one of which is currently held by Michael Leary of New Hampshire. To assist in filling these vacancies, N.H. Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division will host a candidates' interview night on Monday, February 11, at 7:00 p.m., at the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth, N.H. 

Bonus Trout Stocked for Anglers in Selected Lakes, Ponds and Rivers
January 18, 2008 -- Recent stockings of surplus brown and brook trout in spawning colors should lead to some pleasantly surprised anglers in New Hampshire. These fish, topping out at over two pounds and 18 inches, will challenge and reward the dedicated angler. List of waterbodies stocked.

January 16, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department and N.H. Ducks Unlimited are pleased to announce the availability of prints of  "Duck Blind Heaven" by Robert Childress. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of each print will benefit both organizations.

Fish and Game Department Performance Audit Report Released; Recommendations for Changes Made
January 15, 2008 -- The Office of the Legislative Budget Assistant, Audit Division's Performance Audit Report of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department was released today. "The Department concurred or concurred in part with 90% of the audit observations," said Acting Executive Director Donald S. Clarke.

Wildlife Action Grants Available for Teachers
January 10, 2008 --
- A new round has opened for teachers interested in starting wildlife habitat projects to apply for start-up funds from the Homes for Wildlife Action Grant Program at the N.H. Fish and Game Department. The program provides mini-grants for projects allowing students and educators to enhance habitat for people and wildlife.

Registration Opens for Winter Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Workshop
January 7, 2008 -- Registration has opened for the 2008 Winter Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (B.O.W.) workshop, a one-day program for women who want to learn winter outdoor skills.  The sign-up period is January 7 through February 8

Salem, N.H., Man Injured in Snowmobile Accident
January 4, 2008 -- Ronald Allen, age 43, of Salem, N.H., was injured in a snowmobile accident at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2008, while riding on the Corridor 104 snowmobile trail in Bethlehem.

January 4, 2008-- Here's a chance to learn about a fun activity to enjoy during the long winter months -- ice fishing.  Join instructors from N.H. Fish and Game's "Let's Go Fishing" Program for a three-week Saturday program in Milford starting January 19.
